A pair minus 1 sock

Yeah!  I finished a sock!  I’m hoping to finish its buddy within a week.

I just stopped by the LYS (is 16 miles local?) and picked up some of the above Supersocke 11.  There was a sample sock at the store and it was gorgeous!  Will try not to ruin the yarn…

I never thought I could love knitting socks!  This is fun.  I’m on my second pair already.  I think I’m going to ask dh to send to eldest daughter when he has time.  (I knit – he can mail – sounds fair doesn’t it?)

Next on the agenda is to make a pair of slippers for J.

Getting the hang of knitting

Or do you call it drape…..Oh, well, the story is that I am trying. So far my knitting portfolio includes:

  • 2 pink scarves
  • 1 purse (my first attempt at cable)
  • 1 whole pair of socks for the dh
  • a wip pair of socks for myself.

Hubby’s socks.

Ed’s socks. After finishing the first one, I told him if he was lucky that he might just get something that looked similar for a second sock. He didn’t care – how perfectly forgiving of him. He wanted a bulky sock that he could wear under his boots that are a tad too big. I must say I did a much better job on the second one than the first. I kind of hid the botched heel attempt of the first sock under the second “matching” one.

My socks

This is the beginning of a pair of socks for myself. I found some old yarn in my stash, I’m sure it’s from a baby blanket or something done long ago. It looked like the right weight, felt very soft, and is the right color blue that I wanted. I figure if it doesn’t turn out the right size, I could always find a home for them.

DH’s socks are from a couple of patterns, “George’s Socks,” that I have bookmarked at work, so I can’t give proper due at the moment, and some hints and tricks on the heel taken out of Leisure Arts “I Can’t Believe I’m Knitting Socks” book. I did grave disservice to them both, so they probably won’t care that I have given credit where it is due. I’m so new to knitting… and reading patterns… and using …1-2-3-4- count them – 5 double pointed needles that I’m just happy Icould finish with something wearable at this point.

MY OLD FRIEND CROCHET – don’t worry dear, I have not forsaken you. Since I posted my pattern for the shawl on the Hadley Fiber Arts Guild blog (see link at right) I started a new one in red just to verify that I remembered what I did correctly and would be able to type it all up accurately. So now I have a good start to that project too.

DON’T FORGET SPINNING – never! I purchased a “Mystery Fiber” of part wool and part acrylic up at Zeilingers when I was there for a convention this fall. I couldn’t resist the price per pound, and it seemed like a good soft fiber. I am making a lace weight yarn with it.

The boring grey fiber is spinning into some very lovely silver, and even though I’m spinning at the highest ratio my little Mazurka has, it is staying extremely soft and the singles are giving off a mild halo. I am so looking forward to making a shawl with this. I will have some roving left over and maybe I can use this to make socks (silver socks?).

My first written crochet pattern!

I make a lot of crocheted items. And since I was never formally introduced to reading them, I learned long ago to just make up my own. I get people asking me to write down my patterns, or sell them. I finally got talked into writing one up. It’s a thread crochet shawl I made.

Meet Abel. He is roaming a nearby yard. His fleece was white as snow.

It is now in shades of turquoise, lime green and moss green.

The turquoise is finished. The lime green is mostly done with one single waiting to be plied with the other two colors. I dyed lots of the lime green. I wanted extra. I’ve already finished one Navajo plied skein (pictured below). I still have some left to comb out into top and spin for another skein.

The moss green part is still drying after the dye process. It will have to be combed into top, spun, then plied with the other two colors.

I signed up for a Ravelry account and got my invite today! Yeah! Now I’m having fun looking at all the socks and looking at the groups and forums. I will be busy for over a week!

But wait! I finished knitting my first sock today. The trick is to see if I can make a second one that resembles the first : ) !
