Finally a product

After what seems like months of coughing, sneezing, wheezing etc., I finally have a product.  The deadly silk/merino yarn!  Since it is all plyed, washed and in bloom, I think I’m rather proud I stuck it out.Silk and Merino yarn

Deadly Merino/Silk Update

I just had to write to the company that I bought the fiber from – Pollywog – about my problem. I know if one of my products caused an allergic reaction to a customer I would want to know. I would want to either find a solution or just be aware of what’s happening for future knowledge.

To their credit, I actually got a reply and apology back. She replied that there was no bleaching process used. It seems that they too seem to think that I am allergic to the silk gum (saliva). She was actually going to contact the processor to see what they used. I was very impressed to get a reply. I can respect a company that acknowledges a problem, even if they cannot do anything about it.

Personally, I kind of think that their processor forgot to wash the silk – there was just too much fine powder for it to be anything else.

Beautiful but deadly roving

I’m taking a hiatus from spinning due to allergies.  I’m assuming that it’s whatever they bleached the 50% Merino/50% Tussah silk with that I was spinning is letting off a fine white powder in the air, all over my wheel, pants, feet and most likely into my lungs.  I posted to LJ’s SpinningFiber and that was the suggested problem that made sense.

I have two spots 3″ round on the back of my arms about 5 inches up from the wrist where my sleeves end while I’m spinning.  I think the powder has been lodging there and raising welts.  My nasal allergies have also kicked up into high gear since I started spinning this stuff.  I had to go to the doctors because I couldn’t stop coughing and had terrible nasal drainage.

I stopped with half a skein done and am waiting until my lungs clear up to even touch the stuff enough to wash it to see if it can be finished.  It is truly beautiful, just deadly stuff.

Anyone else run into trouble with this?
