It is me, or just January?
January 24, 2007 at 6:23 pm | In spinning | Leave a CommentHave you ever started a project that you were so excited about, then one day when you sat down to work on it, it just seemed like you have much better options, like starting something different? I have found recently with the soy silk, and now with the blue Merino, that I got more than a pound of the same fiber of the same color, for a specific project, and near the end of the last single, it becomes a chore. (But because of my anal-retentive, Type A personality, I will get it done!)
Since I’ve only had my wheel for just over a year, these are the first instances it has happened. That’s why I asked the question: is it me, or just January? I seem to have the blahs for just about everything now.
Spun/Crochet/Felt Fedora
January 14, 2007 at 1:57 pm | In Crochet Projects, Felt, spinning | Leave a CommentHere is my newest hat! I used a grey Romney to spin, crocheted it into the hat and felted and shaped it into the Fedora you see. I then dyed it black (see previous posts). I will be giving it to a friend soon. She is an excellent knitter, but one of the rare ones that appreciates a good crochet. I’m not sure how well you can see in the picture, but I thread crochet the red hat band nice and lacy. The hat is truly thick and warm.
Soy Silk update
January 13, 2007 at 6:46 pm | In crochet, spinning | Leave a CommentI have spun most of the pound of soy, plied it and have started the baby afghan.
Plied soy silk still on the spools. I read everywhere that this was hard to ply because you have to prepare the singles with a lot of spin. I kept the spools on the opposite end of the lazy kate, separated around each side of me, guided and detangled with my right and fed with my left hand. That worked well and the plying fixed a lot of overspun sections.
Here is a section of the crocheted baby afghan I’m making with the soy silk. It will end up approx. 3 ft x 3 ft. and will be around 14 oz. Since I bought a full pound, I’ll have to figure out what I will want to do with the rest.
Looking back at 2006 – n – forward to 2007
January 3, 2007 at 10:17 pm | In Musings | Leave a CommentBecause I’ve been working on my masters degree, I haven’t had as much time to devote to crafting as I would have liked. I would still call myself a fanatic though.
Some of the accomplishments to look back on:
- Learning to felt!
- Knowing the difference between a lot of fibers
- Chasing down soy silk – you will only get this if you’ve done it
- Conquering spinning ratios!
- Making a center draw skein from my Nostepienne
Looking forward:
- Making new spinning blog friends!
- Making new guild friends!
- Learning to Navaho ply – just finished watching the tape – so cool
- Finding a new home with acreage for sheep or alpacas.
- Learning how to shear, clean and card
