Spinning Guild

Yeah! I finally got in contact with the lady that runs a local spinning guild. I get to go to my first meeting on the 11th! She told me about two other spinning guilds nearby that I didn’t know about. I told her that it took a year to find a guild, I had searched online and didn’t get anything closer than a half hour drive away. She laughed and said that the local guilders were too busy tending to their sheep/alpacas/llamas etc. to post stuff online. That’s why I couldn’t find any of them.

I am seriously going to try to make a travel case for my little Mazurka. I know it is small and easy to cart around and I can just put it in my car, but I really want to cover it so it doesn’t get scratched or anything. It sits out in my living room in front of my picture window looking out onto the lake, so I have never had to worry about where to store it, or how to cover it. Should I make pockets for my bobbins, niddy noddies, nostepienne and roving? Or should I make a separate, but matching bag for those?

First Kool-Aid Dye

I’m dying one of the wool hats today. I want it to turn out black to match a friend’s red coat. The lady at the store where I bought the black dye suggested that I Kool-Aid dye it the dark cherry first. It is now processing and is smelling great.

Before I decided to dye it, it was already felted and shaped into a fedora. I’m hoping the dye process doesn’t get it too out of shape. Hopefully I can just rework back to the original shape to dry and then I can just look forward to accessorizing!

Pics of Soy Silk

The soy silk n process:

Soy Silk Draped over wheel Soy Silk 2 Soy Silk 3 SoySilk on Bobbin

The first picture (l to r) is about one third of what I received, just draped over my wheel. The second is to show how shiny and silky it really is. The third picture shows how long the fibers are, and last – but excitinly not least, what it looks like as a single on the bobbin.  The bobbin picture just doesn’t do it justice.  It is so pretty.  This is going to be made into a baby blanket for my friends’ first grandbaby.

This is not the easiest fiber to work with and little threads get attached to your clothes, the wheel, furniture and whoever passes by.  I’m finding myself gathering fibers from wherever I’ve been after spinning.

Soy Silk

I just received my soy silk in the mail. It is so soft! I keep stopping to pet what’s on the bobbin – oooohhhhhh!

It’s not that easy to spin at first, I had to change my wheel to the biggest ratio difference and it really helped. It doesn’t stay in a roving but falls apart very easily. This is going to be a wonderful challenge.

Watch the world happen as you spin

I am so lucky to have a window that gives me a wonderful view. As I was plying some Romney today, watching about 300 mergansers on the lake, what should happen to roost on a nearby tree, but a bald headed eagle! It sat and watched those ducks for a long time. You could almost see it drooling over it’s thoughts of not so roasted duckling for dinner.

I finally couldn’t take it any more, since this is the first time I’d seen an eagle in our area, and went and got the camera. Not content to take a picture through the glass, I slipped out the side door and slowly made my way onto my deck. After taking two steps down, the eagle spotted me and took off. How sad that I didn’t get a picture.

I finally went back to my wheel and started plying, and watching the ducks.
