This is the yarn made from the roving bought near Perdue. I separated the roving into fourths. Then I pre-drafted and spun. The plied yarn came out very fine and very, very soft. I haven’t set the twist yet. I saw another post that said they put hair conditioner in the soak to really lay down the fiber and keep it soft, so I will probably try it on this yarn.
I’ve got the blues!
October 21, 2006 at 12:25 pm | In Spinning projects, Uncategorized | Leave a CommentMore blue fiber. I picked up this combed top at a yarn shop down in Indiana w
hen I took a seminar at Purdue. It is the softest I’ve ever spun. The label did not say what type of wool it was, which is a shame. I’d love to pick up some more. I truly admire the hand dyed colors. It reminds me of some of the fabrics that Uli from Project Runway uses. Something out of 70’s tie-died fashion.
I haven’t figured out what I am going to make with it yet. Since it is so soft and is working up in a very fine thread, I’ll probably make a vest or shell or something next to the skin. Maybe a hat and glove set.
There is approx. 10 oz. of fiber and since I’m spinning it thin, there will probably be about three good size skeins.
The lure of sitting in front of my living room window, looking out at the lake with all of the fall colors changing and the many different types of migrating ducks as I spin is just too much to pass up. I should be studying, or grading papers or doing lesson plans, but no, I have to spin. At least while it is daylight.
When does daylight savings time kick in? I think it is next Sunday, but I’m not quite sure. I’ll look it up. It always seems that the kids should be starting to trick or treat around 6pm when suddenly the time changes just before Halloween and it gets dark around 4:30 or 5. Not the most pleasant thought.

October 19, 2006 at 7:20 pm | In Crochet Projects, Spinning projects | Leave a CommentI just finished the garnet colored wool and the multi -colored blue tones for Barbara. I used the blues for my banner and here is a picture of the garnet.

I also finished my first ever hand spun, hand crocheted and then felted hat. It was such a pretty blue and I had to make it into a hat. It is hard to get the picture not to be too bright so the blue is ending up to look a little too bright in the picture.

The busy-ness of it all!

Amid the teaching, learning and general hectic life I lead, I have found such peace in the gentle spinning of my wheel to create the most soothing fiber imaginable.
Recently I met my friend at a wool festival. I picked out a couple bags of wool for myself and she did not see any yarn she wanted, but loved the color wool I picked. So – go ahead and get it, I will spin it! And oh how lovely it turned out, I don’t want to let it go! She really did do a nice job of picking out some fine wool. She made a point of telling me not to spin the perfect yarn and pick out the defects. She wanted the lumps, the thick and the thin without corrections.
